Incidentally, one thing they imported was parliamentarism, which, after some hiccoughs, started to work and did so until the militarists took over in the 1930's. After the Second World War, the Japanese Parliament once more worked the way it was supposed to to - as a democratically elected insitution for law-making and debate. Alas, at present few Arab countries seem interested in something similar. That might change, of course.
Besides, Japanese started with strenghtening their religious traditions and building a spirit of extreme nationalism by getting rid of western influences, just like the Arabs are trying to do now...
