It seems that the preponderance of evidence, both from dictionaries and English-speaking carbon-based units, is that the normal definition is the one referring to one's internal feelings.

That said, it's interesting that the use of the word to describe Sept. 11 comes mostly from America's enemies. It sounds like wish-fulfilment - they *want* America to have been humiliated. Unfortunately for them, we didn't play along. I'm sure this just made them angrier. So be it.
