This is untrue, the army was sent in to protect the nationalists and was welcomed at first. Jon.

Absolutely right, Jon.

The problem, however, is that they came under the control of the Unionist Stormont regime*, which used them to further their own ends (which were identical to those of the Paisleyites - put down the Civil Rights movement).

Eventually (after the events on Bloody Sunday) the British Government realised their mistake and prorogued Stormont in disgrace, but by then it was too late to stop the modern Troubles.
