I don't know that 9/11 was our >finest< hour, but it was definitely well up in the positive end of the spectrum. This from the view of how >we< acted. The fact that some planes were hijacked and flown into buildings does not reflect badly on >us< - it could have happened almost anywhere.

Our 'darkest hour' would probably be various acts of the Indian extermination campaign (the medals of honor given for murdering women and children at Wounded Knee for instance) or possibly the (innocent in itself) invention of the cotton mill.
