Undoubtedly. However, right *now* its Israel who is preventing the peace.

I'm curious - what specifically would you have them do? Part of their problem is that they can't think of a way to get the Palestinians to deal. Negotiations don't work, force doesn't work. National suicide is not an option, and the Palestinians won't settle for less. If you were PM of Israel, what would *you* do?

Good question. :-)

Well, I guess I would do two things for starters. I would stop building new colonies on West Bank and Gaza, and I would start removing the old ones. Even if that wouldn't bring immediate peace, it would remove the prime reason for Palestineans to hate Israel, and thereby make it easier for moderate Palestineas to take over the extremeists.

Those settlements are the reason why I cannot feel much sympathy for Israel in the current crisis. I agree that there are reasons for Israel to show mistrust for Arabs, and to that it is understandable for them to be concerned for the security of their country. But the settlements do not serve any other purpose then cause bitterness among Palestineans. As long as they exist, Israel *will* remain as the 'bad guy' in the eyes of international community, and deservingly.

If Israel is serious about making the peace with Arabs, it should immediately start clearing out the settlements. There is no need to have a peace treaty first. Occupying foreign territory to protect yourself can be acceptable under certain circumstances. Colonialisation of that area can never be that.
