Raven<winces>Could you please keep in mind the distinction between southern Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives), and south-eastern Asia (the ASEAN states)? I am not aware that any south Asian dictators have taken the "cultural" argument. They usually tend to justify authoritarian rule as a temporary suspension of democracy that is regrettable, but necessary.
Thus, to screeching Hell with the so-called Asian values that some authoritarian leaders in southern Asia have used
