It is likely IMO that this was an inside job, not by the PSNI [RUC] but by British Secret Service Spooks acting precipituously to cover for several of their own operatives, possibly some of whom are still in the field, who would eventually have been inplicated in secretarian murders carried our by protestant paramilitaries in the upcoming and current investigations into police conduct and murder of solicitors.

Btw, did you see the lead item in today's Sunday Tribune, about how the U.K. has been secretly preparing a legal defence with regards to the Dublin and Monaghan bombings? - apparently, they've come up with two 'defences' if (as seems increasingly likely) they're going to be pursued through the courts.

In the first eventuality - that of members of the security forces being named - the instructions are to immediately disown the accused, as having been "on a frolic of their own". In the second - HMG itself being sued - seemingly the intention is to plead 'sovereign immunity', Pinochet's old trick.

Do you think they know something we don't, about the imminent Barron Inquiry's report?
