I trot it out mainly to justify Israel's rejection of a Palestinian right of return. Obviously the Holocaust doesn't excuse Israeli military excesses.

BTW, I don't know how much US internal politics is covered over there, but however weak you think Bush is on Sharon, the Congress is much worse. The US Senate almost passed a resolution of support for Israel's actions last week.

According to polls here, Americans support Israel vs the Palestians

5-1.

What're the odds with regards to toppling democratic governments in South and Central America - Venezuela, say?

I was *quite* startled to see the warm support the military coup in that country has received from Bush's White House, I thought you had worked

that

kind of thing out of US foreign policy during the Clinton years.

Liking a result and causing it are two different things.

Hmm, in America's own 'backyard'? I think Chile a decade or two back shows otherwise, that potential right-wing coups usually approach the US for permission first (if they don't suggest and organise it themselves)

The whole affair stinks like a week-old kipper, and I'm sure that over

the

next few years journos will uncover trails leading right back to the US ambassador and probably a certain Agency based in Langley, Virginia.

Russ
Honestly, I know *zero* about the situation in Venezuala.

Socialist government democratically elected. Started challenging the power of big business, the army and the privileged elite in general (in other word s, a "threat to vital American interests" I believe is the appropriate phraseology used to describe such dastardlies).

Lauded by the UN for becoming (in the last few years) the closest likeness there is to a normal democracy in South America, with conspicuously few 'disappearances' of journalists, trade unionists and human rights activists. The only country on the continent where the standards of living of the poor were improving.

Although what I can say is that the massive popular demonstrations against

the

govenments appeared to indicate it was the people that didn't like the government, not the CIA.

As I understand it, big business actually *paid* their workers to go out on the streets and strike. The cover story for the generals' coup was that Chavez had supposedly tried to have one of these 'strikes' put down.

Now, to actually believe this, you have to suspend disbelief that Chavez relied not (in the time-honoured tradition of South American nasty types) on ordering the generals to clear the streets, but employed a couple of anonymous 'rooftop snipers' in civilian attire to do the job.

As I said, the whole affair stinks, and it's highly suspicious that Ari Fletcher (the White House spokesman) stepped so *quickly* up to welcome the military coup and the new 'leader' (the fattest of the big industry fat cats), without even waiting a few days to assess the situation first.

So, I think this is typical Irish conspiracy theories. Rather, from all appearances it appears what happened in

Venezuela

was brought about by Venezuelans.

Yup, and Elvis is still alive.
