For the record: I support both sides of the conflict here. Each has its own rights and truths.

They will acknowledge Israel diplomatically, the way some of them (Egypt

and

Jordan) already have, for all practical purposes. Furthermore, Israel's strategical situation would actully improve if they abandoned all those illegal settlements on the West bank; it would be much easier to defend their citizens.

Actually, the main reason Israelis insists on keeping West Bank is the strategical advantage this gives them. It's the '12 km' principle - without West Bank, Syrian tanks can get across Israel in 12 km from the border to the sea. That's what I heard, at least.

Anyway, you miss the point that the West Bank and Gaza do not belong to Israel and that it is illegal for them to keep them occupied.

The problem is - they _won_ it in regular war, the war that wasn't even their fault, and in which they were the defensive side. So I don't know about illegality of that, at least from Israel's POV.

Israel wants peace? Then let them leave the West Bank and Gaza. That

*is*

the first step.

If that's just the first step, what's the second?
