Ofcourse, an interesting side note is that I think "treason" is the only crime which still carries the death penalty in the UK, or am I incorrect on that one ?

Chris :)

The offences of piracy on the high seas, arson in her majesty's dockyards and high treason used to carry the death penalty after its abolition for murder.

High treason was

killing or trying to kill the sovereign or immediate heir adultery with their [female consorts]

That cad Hewitt could have been charged with this offence IMHO.

PS death penalty now rescinded for these offences too.

It may still exist for espionage in a time of war, but obviously this charge can not be brought in peace time. RMC
