The IRA have issued a statement denying their involvement. Say what you like about the Continuity IRA, the Real IRA, or any other shade of Republicanism, the actual IRA have never been shown to state other than facts AFAICR.

I could have sworn they denied that the murderers of Garda McCabe were on active service, until it became obvious otherwise?

You could be right John, I don't recall exactly. There were a lot of ifs and buts about those killings. I *do* recall wondering at the time why such a vicious assult, almost an execution, was caried out on two Garda? by armed raiders who were supposedly IRA men. Certainly it wouldn't have been seen at that time to be IRA policy to go around killing Garda?, when there was no need to do so.

Even on the basis of self-preservation, if the IRA men had assumed that there were "armed Garda?" waiting outside, why would they have stood there peppering a car with bullets? How did they know there were only two, i.e. how did they know they could spend their time peppering a car wen there might be sharpshooteers outside under cover waiting for them?

OTOH If they knew there were only two and how well armed they were, why did they kill them? All they had ot do was capture them in case therewere road blocks set up. Or disable their car and perhaps shoot them in the legs to prevent pursuit. Riddling the policemen with bullets didn't ring true for me.

More importantly, as per the second option, HOW did they know about the two Garda?? An IRA mole?
