I think you are reading slightly too much into the whole "treason" thing. Even in England we're talking more about "selling government secrets to other countries" treason, rather than: "Saying the Royal family sucks" treason. British people can say anything they want about the royal family.

And do. And about our Prime Minister and the various members of the government and parliament - ever seen Spitting Image? (mind you, if you are claiming something nasty you are saying is =truth=, rather than humour, then you'd better have some proof =in your hands=, because Libel, Slander and Defamation of Character are quite different from humour)

Ofcourse, an interesting side note is that I think "treason" is the only crime which still carries the death penalty in the UK, or am I incorrect on that one ?

Not any longer. This point came up vis a vis the UK born Muslims fighting for the Taliban.
