That said, it's interesting that the use of the word to describe Sept. 11 comes mostly from America's enemies. It sounds like wish-fulfilment - they *want* America to have been humiliated. Unfortunately for them, we didn't play along. I'm sure this just made them angrier. So be it.

That is indeed what I was saying. And America's judicious use of economic and military power to disposess the Taliban, rather than just "nuking them till they glowed, then shooting them in the dark!" -- as many anti-Americans nastily assumed would be the natural response -- has made that attempt at humiliation even harder to stick.

It's a little difficult to claim you've humiliated someone when you're squatting in a remote cave trying to put out the fire in your shirttails.
