Or Sweden. You didn't participate in the colonial ratrace, did you?

Not really. Though in 1784, King Gustav III acquired the French West Indian Island of Saint Barth?lemy from France in return for a depot in Gothenburg. The island functioned as a free port, selling goods to the various powers in the Caribbean (Britain, The US, Spain and so on), earning Sweden a fair bit of money. However, during the 19th century the island lost its economic importance after Britain opened its colonies for American ships and the trade routes shifted, and in 1878 Sweden sold it back to France after a referendum were everybody except one person voted for a return for France. The money from the sale ((320,000 francs) was used for pensions for the functionaries that had served Sweden on the island. Just about the only memories from the Swedish period are some houses in the capital, and its name: Gustavia. Oh, yes, and then there was that short-lived colony in North America, New Sweden (1638-55). It was conquered by the Dutch, and then the Dutch were conquered by the English. All that remained were the Swedish and Finnish settlers and their descendants, and the log cabin, which they introduced in America, being more woodcrafty than the English and the Dutch. New Sweden comprised parts of what is now Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
