Jay RandomJordan and Israel are formally and in practice at peace with each other now. Question is how much longer that will be true if israel completely refuses do do any concession about handing abck the West Basnk to the Palestinians, *who are its rightful owners*.
Before 1967, Israel was six miles wide at its narrowest point. Unless the U.S. is willing to keep massive numbers of ground troops stationed permanently in Israel (as it used to do in West Germany), it cannot possibly act in time to prevent an Arab attack from cutting Israel into two or more pieces. The Israelis themselves know that the 1948-67 borders put them in a hopeless strategic position against enemies that have never formally ceased to be at war with them; that's why they want bases on the Jordan.
Another thing: The U.S. was supporting Israel in 1967. Also in 1948, 1956, 1973, & 1982. That's five times the Arabs have gone to full-scale war against Israel, _despite_ the Israelis' American backing. If it didn't stop them five times before, why should it stop them now?The war in 1956 was started by Israel, Britain and France. The war in 1982 was Israel's invasion of Lebanon.
