Yes. The British Army initially came into to protect Catholics from rampaging mobs of paramilitary policemen and state-supported loyalist mobs.

However, overall that's not going to be a very convincing arguments to Americans, at least. We welcomed the British Army to help us fight the French in the French and Indian War (ie. the American front of the War of 1763). Well, the British Army soon outwore its welcome and we all know what came of that.

In any event, the British Army did in fact invade nationalist areas. Operation Motorman is an obvious example.
