The definition you ascribe to Paul has some problems. I'm sure we all agree that the Palestinian groups who do homicide bombings are terrorist groups,

yet

they have a popular mandate and they are fighting on their own land.

Not when they let of bombs in Israel they aren't.. I'd have no problems if they ran upto Israeli soldiers and THEN let off their bombs..

OK, so when they bomb soldiers, that is not terrorism. I think we can agree on that.

Ok... I'll grant that then... but only if the Army concerned can shoot as spies anyone not wearing a uniform (as per normal warfare)

When they bomb civilians in Israel, that is terrorism. We seem to agree on that.

hell yes...

What about when they bomb civilians in the West Bank, what is that?

Probably yes...

Now for the larger question. How do you describe them in general? Are they a revolutionary group that has committed terrorist acts? Or are they a terrorist group that has revolutionary aspirations? I think it's safe to say the vast majority of the victims of Palestinian violence are civilians.

Its hard to lump 'them' together tho isn't it? There's probably half a dozen groups so its hard to have an blanket definition. IF they defend their homes with Guns then they're acting as per the IRA claim to be during the early 70s.. but when they sit on buses and pull a detonator they're undoubtedly terrorists committing terrorist acts. Either way they're terrorist groups by and large..
