It's really an awful situation. I've got no easy solution to offer. Except that, perhaps, one day the people on _both_ sides are sick and tired of the war and kick away the power-hungry fanatics on _both_ sides. But that might remain a silly dream...

I don't think so. There are people on both sides who just want peace. Of course, peace would include having a country of one's own to live in without fear of terrorist bombers or Israeli soldiers. I submit that if Israel stopped making life unendurable for the Palestinians, the supply of suicde bombers would dry up; the fanatics had great difficulties recruiting such people (it's not as if they were willing to commit suicide themselves) before the Israeli army began to inspire despair. The only real guarantees for its existence Israel can ever have is A) good relations with is neighbours and B) the support of the US. The country's present government is apparently indifferent to the first and seems to take the support of America for granted, which may be a mistake. I don't think America will put up forever with getting milked for money and weapons and protection while having everything it says dismissed out of hand. Above all, the American public will probably not stand for it forever, and the American public sooner or laters reacts through the ballot box.
