Not exactly. Jehovah's Witnesses are a result of American religious freedom. Over the last century, a lot of ultra-conservative evangelical Christian groups have popped up all over the country in the wake of various religious revivals. The Jehovah's Witnesses are one of the more well-known sects, probably because of their damn annoying proselytization practices.

I heard that they believe that only 144,000 people would be saved. Of course, there are more JW's than that...

And every JW probably believes that he or she is toeing the line so well that they'll be part of the 144,000.

But then they have some pretty strange beliefs. I read that they don't believe in heaven, hell or souls; rather they believe that everyone dies until the Last Judgement, then God (I should say Jehovah, since all the JH's think they're on a first name basis with Him or something... :)) will resurrect every human that has ever lived, then destroy all the sinners, and then the 144,000 will get to live with him forever.

They're also one of the groups that are constantly predicting the Second Coming. They've been doing it for about a century now, and everytime Jesus shows up late, they move the date forward... :)
