Quite so. However rule by Code Napoleon was preferable in my eyes to the absolutist rule that preceded and succeeded Bonapartism.

Arkady, you do know, don't you, that the French occupation was perceived as oppression by the peoples subjcted to it? I am talking about the Dutch (who certainly needed no lessons in running a good society from the French), the inhabitants of the various German principates, the Spaniards, the Italians, the Swiss and quite a number of other peoples. They preferred to work out how their society they should look themselves, just as, for example, the subjected peoples in the former Soviet Union. And talking about absolutist rule - what do you think Napoleon's rule was? He decided everything; the Bourbons never wielded such total power as he did.
