I actually wonder whether there isn't a link. Abused childrens can grow

up into

abusing adults. Maybe abused communities lose some degree of compassion

and

become abusing countries, if the conditions are right.

Well, let's not forget that Israel tried pretty hard to achieve a peace settlement before all this started.

*Yitzhak Rabin* and his faction tried it, and he paid the ultimate price for his efforts - at the hand of a right-wing Israeli assassin - remember?

And Barak tried it. What did he get for his trouble? The Palestinians went to war and ensured his defeat in favor of Sharon.

Israel wasn't that far from a civil war itself in the mid-90's, the extreme Zionists (as exemplified by the obnoxious Mr. Netanyahu)

He's right-wing but he's not at the extreme. Those on the left have a skewed vision of the right. Probably works both ways. Netanyahu would have been better than Sharon.

In this thread, I've been in the position of defending Sharon, although I do not particularly like him. What I object to are those who say they Palestinians rightfully object to negotiating with him. My point is that if the Israeli's have to negotiate with the orc Arafat then the Palestinians very well have to negotiate with Sharon.

Even more so because it was the Palestinians who got Sharon elected.

are a *quite* nasty bunch, who obviously much prefer a good ol' war, followed by some ethnic cleansing, as a solution to their problems.

This is precisely why I have little sympathy for the Palestinians. They purposefully caused Barak, the Labor PM who was negotiating with them, to lose the election and they themselves caused Sharon to win. They are therefore reaping precisely what they sowed.
