Which has nothing to do with knowing what the _official_ name of the UK is. Official names are often stupidly incorrect.

Tis considered polite in Britain NOT to use the full _official_ name when one is not sure of everyone's alliegences.

One may know the full official name, yet choose to use a shortened and less offensive (to some) version in international company.
