The question is not about who defeated them. The question is about being proud and being humiliated at the same time.
The Japanese felt that way in the 1800's. Their response was to modernize themselves, and they went on to become one of the most powerful nations on earth. If the Arabs don't like being backward and weak, they need to dump the baggage that's holding them back.
Besides, Japanese started with strenghtening their religious traditions and building a spirit of extreme nationalism by getting rid of western influences, just like the Arabs are trying to do now...
