The problem is - they _won_ it in regular war, the war that wasn't even their fault, and in which they were the defensive side. So I don't know about illegality of that, at least from Israel's POV.

You don't becoem the rightful owner of an area because you conquered it in

a

war.

not anymore, i suppose. but the concept used to work. worked in england for the celts, the angles, saxons, and jutes, and the normans. worked in asia minor for the turks. worked throughout the americas, australia, new zealand... worked in konigsberg/kaliningrad for the russians, more recently.

i like to fool myself that the world's become a nicer place than that, but... only time will tell whether the israelis get away with it.

seems to me that the palestinians should rediscover civil disobedience, ala thoreau and gandhi: play nice, do whatever the conqueroring israelis say, and watch u.s. public opinion turn, in response to the poor peaceful palestinians being crowded off their own lands, into squalid reservations -- i mean interment camps -- no, wait, refugee camps, that's what they're calling them this time around, right.

shooting themselves in the foot, that's what the palestinians are doing, all right.
