: Well, in the case of the United States the goal of the government is to : : "...form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, : provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare and secure the : Blessings of Liberty..." Constitution of the United States of America, : Preamble.

Now if they'd understood that these goals were best achieved under a hereditary Monarchy they'd have been onto something.

I wouldn't go that far. I don't that a Monarchy is absolutely necessary to long term stability and justice. I do think that, warts included, the United States has created the most successful republic in modern history. After the Civil War, all political groups made an effort to work within the constraints of the Union. Look at France for an example of a country that has, since the downfall of the Monarchy, rewritten its basic laws several times.

So, though I am a Monarchist, I'm not allergic to the notion of republics. I think that a well-constructed republic will succeed as well as a well-constructed constitutional monarchy. It is when both types of government are taken to absurd extremes, such as some of the Arab kingdoms and republics like China or the Soviet Union, that problems arise.
