I really don't see how John's example disagrees with Laurie's dictionary.

Laurie's dictionary defined the term the same way I understand it: as an internal reaction on the part of the victimized. "loss of self-respect, strong feelings of embarrassment, depriving one of self-esteem", etc. John's example seemed to me to use the word to refer to the victimization rather than the victim's reaction to it.

The distinction is important, I think, because it seems to be what we're disagreeing about. According to the dictionary definition of the word, America could only be humiliated if we Americans *felt* humiliated, and it's pretty clear by now that this wasn't the case. Morgil is asserting that those who felt humiliated by us now regard us as being humiliated, but it just isn't true if you understand the meaning of the word.

Are you trying to slam her because she has indicated she is fed up with the constant use of the word "brood sow"?

I don't regard it as a slam to quote from her dictionary. I agreed with her post. Do you?

I must admit that it is beginning to feel a bit old to me too.

It is because of you that I use the term! I tried a more civilized way of expressing my displeasure with her: voting for her as Miss Balrog. You prevented that, however, because you were determined to use this NG as a vehicle for your crusade against Jerry Falwell. I felt repressed and humiliated as a result, and so I lash out whenever I can.
