Neil EllwoodWell, just to give you the benefit of the doubt I downloaded GIMP 2.8. Everything I tried to open failed with a "parameter mismatch" error. Seems that out of the box it can't open a JPEG without some fiddling.

What's that got to do with it? Using a mouse to click about is the same on osx, windows or linux why is that so difficult for you to grasp. There is no awareness or expertise of the os required to do that
what you fail to grasp is that on a mac or windows, what takes a click or two, takes all sorts of hoops on linux.
Provide me with an example of that can you?

What a pity you don't keep up to date. Must be this OSX thing.
Googling the problem I find that this has been ongoing since 2002-- apparently the installer doesn't set something up properly. When it does, get back to us.
