Apart from news photographers such as Robert Capa whose fame was earned mostly by their subjects and their circumstances, I don't know of any photographer at the top of their profession who did rely on extensive manipulation of their images in the dark room.

Surely you are aware that much of Adams' work relating to the Zone system was done while producing prints in the darkroom. The capture and exposure of the subject was just the start of his process.
