But then you have to explain how it is that individual drivers will have their cars set up differently to suit their own preferences.

Sandman
No I don't. For these reasons:

1. I said that a race car driver doesn't NEED to know about car MECHANICS

2. You said ALL successful ones have ENGINEERING skills

This is not only clearly false, it is also your usual switching of words and usage of absolute terms.

Eric Stevens
It's not only factually true and its only usage of absolute terms in your mind.

Sandman
Another claim from Eric.

Your job now is to list all "successful" race car drivers and present copies of their engineering diplomas and/or credentials.

There are a few I can think of going all the way back to the Alfa Romeo teams run by one Enzo Ferrari who both drove for, designed, engineered, and managed the Alfa Romeos in "Scudaria Ferrari". Here is a pretty valuable Scudaria Ferrari Alfa running at Laguna Seca. < https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/Shared%20Images/Automotive/Laguna%20Seca%20Extras/DNC4634w2.jpg

Then there was a guy we all know, Carroll Shelby, educated in aeronautical engineering, instructor pilot during WWII. He went on to racing in the 40's, 50's, & 60's. Building and engineering his own designs, and winning at Le Mans. < https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/Shared%20Images/Automotive/Laguna%20Seca%20Extras/DNC4947Aw.jpg

Dan Gurney, with an engineering background built his own race cars before entering the World of Le Mans & F1 racing. Then he designed and built his Gurney Eagle F1 racer powered by the V-12 Gurney-Westlake engine and which won the 1969 Belgian GP. < https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/Shared%20Images/Automotive/67-Eagle-V12-cw.jpg

A.J Foyt started life as a mechanic and his success in racing with Indy 500 and Le Mans wins is undisputed.

Jack Brabham was a flight mechanic in the RAAF. He started driving for Cooper and contributed to the Cooper design & engineering team, and went on to build his own cars and team, He won three F1 championships, two for Cooper and one in his own car.

John Surtees worked at the Vincent motorcycle factory as an apprentice before going on to be the only winner of World championships in Motorcycle racing and F1. He went on to become a successful builder of F1 and F2 cars.

Then there was this guy from NZ, Bruce Mclaren, who designed, built, and raced F1, Can-Am, and Le Mans cars. < https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/Shared%20Images/Automotive/Laguna%20Seca%20Extras/DNC4233-1.jpg

Today all the F1 teams value drivers who can provide feedback of a precise type and there are only a few drivers who can be successful today just using their talent behind the wheel.

Senna, Schumaker, Scott Dixon were/are all noted for their technical input.

Stop making absolute claims you can't support. That makes you a liar.
