the ring/silent switch is *not* internal. if it were, it would be inaccessible and impossible to toggle it.

look on the side of any iphone and you can plainly see it, which means it's not internal.

Eric Stevens
If it's not internal, why do you have to take the case apart and remove a number of internals to get at it?

Sandman
How does this make it an internal switch? Do you think external switches on a Nikon D300 can be replaced without opening up the camera? You just pop it off with a tweezer and put in a new one?

As you can see, the switch is a toggle switch, on a metal plate. You can only remove it from the inside of the cover for obvious reasons.

Eric Stevens
And you have to work hard to argue that it is an external switch.

not hard at all. the switch is visible from the outside and operated from the outside, therefore it's an external switch.

if you have to open the device to get at the switch, then it's an internal switch. those do exist, for example, dip switches for configuration of the product that only need to be set once.

As far as the D300 is concerned, while the actuating buttons, wheels etc project beyond the casing to where the operator can get at them,

which makes it external.

all the switches etc are inside the casing

talk about quibbling. jeez.
