nospamIt doesn't matter how they are commony referred to. We are talking about how you describe what they do. When you are out in the field, they are power supplies.

yes it can, battereis commomnly supply power to a device.
batteries are not called power supplies.

There's probbaly lots of other reasons to put a battery in a device you could argue that it it. To add wieght, to add cost, because it's fun,
that's not the issue.
