You seem to think that if you can get at it from the outside it is an external switch.

that's what external means.

In that case my TV has got all it's operable controls on the outside too. I can use them from the other end of the room. They've gotta be external.

tvs have external switches. otherwise it would not be possible to change channels, power it on/off, etc.

if you're referring to what happens via a remote control, then that's as external as it gets, since the switch is not even attached to the tv.
