yes it can, battereis commomnly supply power to a device. There's probbaly lots of other reasons to put a battery in a device you could argue that it it. To add wieght, to add cost, because it's fun,

It's doesn;t have to be.

and is

an independent piece that does not need to come from apple nor need it plug into the wall. some generate power in other ways, such as solar, hand crank or even another battery.

Yep another battery can supply power.

all that's needed is +5v power supply (and usb negotiation).
