The NVidia kernel modules do not require any symlinks, so the issue must be in the accessory programs that are kindly provided, and which are not really necessary.
Regardless, a symlink issue should be extremely simple to remedy.
Unless, of course, the ridiculous Gnome DE does something outrageously weird to complicate matters.
