I'm reading the first [Harry Potter] book now, but I'm wondering whether I should read the second book or not. I really want to read the second book, but I wonder if I should wait till the 2nd movie comes out so it won't be spoiled.

I wouldn't worry. The first book is the exception so far, in that it is *just* possible to make a movie out of it without losing anything important. For books 2 through 4, they're going to have to do as much of a hack'n'slash job as they had to do with LotR.

Weird huh? I wanted to read the 2nd Harry Potter book to know what happens next, but I don't really care what happens next in LOTR.

That's because it's the first part of a trilogy, man! You need to see the rest of the story to be able to appreciate the brilliance of the first one.

PS. I'm all but through "The Fellowship of the Ring" now and that really makes me appreciate how good the movie is. The journey to Rivendell is just mind-numbingly boring.
