No, it's not just a guess. It had some hard data behind it, it's just that nospam couldn't remember the actual numbers, so based on memory, he estimated them to be something close to what they were.

i don't need to check every single one. it was a random sample and more than one failed.

it was also not a one time event. it's actually fairly common.

there are often non-functional products in big box stores because people abuse the products and nobody gives a shit about fixing them, or they're on display and missing some key component, usually a battery because people steal them and it's not always possible to connect it to a power source.
