Actually it is a good idea to do any/all/most sharpening on a luminosity layer, LAB or not.

There I was referring to sharpening in general on a luminosity layer, not necessarily LAB, personally I hardly ever use LAB.

do you mean a luminosity blend mode? that can be useful.
