In "Alien", the creature that came forth from the egg (and thenceforth, Kane) on the Space Jockey's derelict was biomechanical in appearance.

Was this due to genetic engineering on the Space Jockey's home planet, or due to being placed on the floor of the spacecraft for so long (hence, absorbing and imprinting itself with genetically useful characteristics from the vessel itself)?

I don't think the craft was alive.

1- The "bones" may have been synthetic constructs that happened to look like bones. 2- Or they were made by the SJ's to look like bones for aesthetic reasons. 3- Or they SJ's took REAL bones from some large creatures because it was a handy building material.

(Or #4 - the bones are real bones added to the interior by the adult aliens in their nest-making process after the landing or crash of the ship.)

The "skin" of the craft's exterior is made from some exotic material, but it's not necessarily fleshy. It could be some kind of plastic or fabric.
