VoltDallas Kane and Lambert didn't explore the entire derelict (their exploration being curtailed by Kane's mishap). There could have been a 5m wide sweeping staircase down there, just around [that corner they hadn't explored beyond], for all we know.
Notice also the height of the hold. And no obvious way of getting down into it (Kane and co resort to their portable winch). Perhaps this was to help
Still, your comment could equally be right, but perhaps the logic you sued to get there is a bit flawed.
