I would expect laid eggs to be more Random. This suggests to me that the eggs down below were intentionally put there as cargo.
Also, in ALIENS, it seems that the queen lays her eggs in one room and then the regular aliens carry them into a second room. I couldn't tell you how more aliens could have gotten on the derelict though.
