Clearly this orderly layout, the very laser-like laser (which represents technology that doesn't fit with anything else of the Alien species), must be good evidence that the eggs were intentionally put into the hold by members of the SJ race, and that therefore they were being transported?

Notice also the height of the hold. And no obvious way of getting down into it (Kane and co resort to their portable winch). Perhaps this was to help isolate this volatile cargo from getting into the crew area.

Hmmm. Maybe the same thing that caused the doors to the outside world to open also caused the door to the cargo hold to open.

I suppose everything opened when the ship started running out of power.

So at some point there may have been a strong barrier between the crew chamber and the cargo hold.

Also, the laser does seem like it could be either: (a) A warning sign -- Do Not Pass Beyond This Point -or- (b) Part of some kind of motion-sensing system. If a facehugger passes through the beam an alarm goes off. (Usually such a beam would be invisible, but maybe it's visible so that a SJ wouldn't accidentally set off the alarm. Plus, it might be designed to be invisible to the facehuggers while still being visible to the SJs.)
