You think semantics is about word meanings. Well, it isn't. Look it up.

Right. It's all of that. That's why I say it is not just a matter of word meanings.

Sandman
Quite the opposite. You said, still quoted above, that it *ISN'T* about word meanings, totally excluding the concept of word meanings from the definition of semantics.

Will you admit to your error? Probably not.

Eric Stevens
It's about word meanings the same way that electronics is about Kirchhoff's law. You can't have semantics without word meanings and you can't have electronics without Kirchhoff's law. But that doesn't mean that semantics is about word meanings or electronics is about Kirchhoff's law.

Sandman
1. "You think semantics is about word meanings. Well, it isn't" 2. "You can't have semantics without word meanings"

You're hilarious.

Oxford: semantics pl.noun the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/semantics?s=t "Linguistics - the study of meaning."

World English Dictionary: "1. the branch of linguistics that deals with the study of meaning"

Eric Stevens
Yes, but it's not just the meaning of words: it's at least the meaning of expressions coonducted wiith words.

Sandman
Word Origin & History: "science of meaning in language"

Eric Stevens
No mention of words as individuals.

Sandman
Medical Dictionary: "The study or science of meaning in language forms."

Eric Stevens
No meaning of words as individuals.

Sandman
Cultural Dictionary: "The scientific or philosophical study of the relations of words and their meanings."

Eric Stevens
Not the meaning of words but the relation of words and their meanings (in their relationship is implied).

Sandman
And I repeat:

"You think semantics is about word meanings. Well, it isn't" - Eric Stevens

Eric Stevens
I will be more precise: You think semantics is just about word meanings. Well, it isn't.

Popinjay's failing is that he will find a word with a definition that he thinks fits the meaning he's trying to convey, but sometimes he has little sense of knowing what that word is truly appropriate for what he's trying to convey.

I'm sure he's able to do that in Swedish, but he repeatedly stumbles when trying to do it in English. That's understandable for a non-native speaker of English, but Popinjay compounds the blunder by defending the usage and insulting those who attempt to correct him.

Perhaps he does learn when corrected, but his arrogance will not allow him to admit it. He will pull out his schoolboy taunts to avoid admission.

What is laughable is that he will claim that semantics are the last resort of the troll when, in fact, a misplaced defense of an error is the real last resort.
