And a bit later, Legolas tells of the moment he heard the seagulls:

"But deep in the hearts of all my kindred lies the sea-longing, which it is perilous to stir. Alas! for the gulls. No peace shall I have again under beech or under elm."

That is very gripping. Do you remember where in the book there is a mention of "the cries of sea-birds who vanished from the world ages ago"? I can't recall it.

Frodo on Cerin Amroth in Lothlorien:

"Frodo stood still, hearing far off great seas upon beaches that had long ago been washed away, and sea-birds crying whose race had perished from the earth."

Galadriel's message to Legolas in 'The White Rider' chapter says:

"Legolas Greenleaf long under tree/ In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea!/ If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore,/ Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more."

I love the flow and rhythm of these lines. Beautiful.

The other classic 'seagulls' reference is Legolas's so-called 'Song of the Sea' from 'The Field of Cormallen':

"To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,/ The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying,/ West, west away, the round sun is falling./ Grey ship, grey ship, do you heat them calling,/ The voices of my people that have gone before me?"

I'm trying to remember other seagull, or sea-bird references. I think there might have been some in some of Frodo's dreams, but I'm not sure.
