Wes ?u Christopher Kreuzer hal!

1) Roman fleet and Caesar sink pirates:

"O fortunatos nimium, sua si bona norint agricolas!"

This is one of my favourites. "Fortunate beyond bliss are the farmers, if they only knew their happiness!" It's an actual quote from Virgil about the perils of the sea.

2) Pirates run aground after fleeing Asterix and Obelix in rowing boat:

"Fluctuat nec mergitur."

"Beaten by the waves, but never sinking". It's particularly funny because it's the motto of Paris.

One from 'Asterix and the Actress'.

3) After saying they need to be careful:

"Ceterarum rerum prudens."

"Prudent in other things" (I think?) I haven't read this book - I haven't even heard of it.

Two from 'Asterix and Obelix All At Sea'.

4) Look, I only gave him a drink of water:

"Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas."

Again from Virgil. "Fortunate is he who is able to know the causes of things."

5) What on Earth did I say wrong?

"Summum jus, summa injuria."

"Extreme rights produce extreme harm". A principle stated by the mediaeval glossators. I don't know the context in the book, unfortunately.

One in 'Asterix and the Secret Weapon'.

6) Floating in the sea:

"Desinit in piscem mulier formosa superne!"

"In a fishtail the beautiful woman ends!" From Horatius. Quite appropriate, given that their ship has just been sunk by a platoon of women.

7) These Gauls are sickening:

"Sic! Ad nauseum!"

Response: "I'm feeling a bit seasic (sic) myself!"

No translation needed here, I think ;-)

From 'Asterix in Belgium'

8) Sailing near the Belgian shore:

"Non licet omnibus adire Corinthum."

"Not everyone is granted the privilege of going to Corinth". A slight variation of one of Horace's epistles.

It was easy to do this myself since all the quotes were familiar, but the online Annotated Asterix is a great resource for the more obscure references in the comics:
