My favourite chapter ending is, of course, the one to "The Siege of Gondor".

In terms of literary merit, it doesn't approach the Bridge of Khazad Dum.

I'd never realised how similar those two scenes were. They are among my favourite as well, and I would guess that it is no accident that these two moments, among the most dramatic in the book, see Gandalf confronting a deadly foe.

For me, some of the battle descriptions, especially the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, are incredible, but the real moments of wonderment are when Tolkien touches on matters of time, death and immortality.

Quotes from 'In the House of Tom Bombadil', 'Many Partings', 'The Great River' (Legolas on time), 'Lothlorien', and 'The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen' spring to mind. But there are so many!
