There used to be a guy named Schmidt who lived in Auckland. He served an apprenticeship with Ernst Leitz before WW2. Among the various other things he did was to drill the holes in the dies through which the first rayon fibre was extruded. Lietz thought so highly of him, even as an apprentice, that he was given the use of a company bicycle. --SavageduckPeterN

The owners are the direct descendants of Jews who were trained in optics by Ernst Leitz, in order to save their lives. There is a lot more to the story than the link shows.
