Had the problem with 2 LaCie and one Toshiba. Not cheap-no-name...

Can't say anything about Toshiba, but LaCie are known to fail more than they work. Can't say I've seen them as pricey, but if they are, it's would be because they are stylish, not because they are higher quality.
