iTunes is not needed for backup. iTunes is not needed to sync contacts. iTunes is not needed for anything. You can buy an iPhone today and use 100% without ever starting iTunes on your computer.
iDevices sync data to iCloud and backup to iCloud if you want to. Works like a dream.

i'd just add that: Apple won't do that: their business model is to get you into their shop at every opportunity.Which, of course, doesn't require you to use iTunes on your computer one single time. The store are available directly on the device, if you didn't know.

And why do you imagine that I would be interested in anything but examples of how APPLE's software has done the opposite of improve; examples you've yet to actually give, BTW.
Just because I believe that you are not a stubborned person, and you are able to consider the universe outside Apple as well? Am I wrong? My statement was not exclusively criticizing Apple. You should at least acknowledge that.
