I'm not in the shoes of the OP, don't know if he really meant iOS or OSX.
I did not spend a lot of time with Mail, but "The inability to filter the view for unread messages is ridiculous in a 6th generation mail app." seems to apply to OSX Mail, don't it?Smart folders have been in OSX Mail since 10.4 Tiger (released 2005, so this is an "ancient" feature by your time standards).
