I surprised that nobody bothered to mention that the Apple iPad 3 is one generation old already as the current model is the iPad 4.

True. Discounting new old stock to get rid of it is common in retailing. Manufacturers will often offer incentives to retailers to not return unsold inventory enabling the retailer to offer these sorts of discounts. I expect that Asus/Google will soon be offering discounts on the Nexus 7 since the next generation is coming soon.

The tablet TAM is shrinking since now sales are likely to be replacements rather than first time purchases. Just like what's happened with LCD televisions. Prices continue to fall. The big money has been made and it's time for some new product category.

I think Apple should leverage its expertise in music and its Garage Band program and app by getting into musical instruments. Musical instruments have very high profit margins and people spend a lot of discretionary income on them, especially parents. The present distribution system for musical instruments is terrible. Maybe only woodwind and string instruments at first: iViolin, iSax, iClarinet, iFlute, iGuitar, iDrums, iPiano, iAmps, etc. These could have a pickup and a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi interface and be integrated with Garage Band and could drive sales of Macs and iOS devices. Teaching programs and applications could be developed or they could buy a company like SmartMusic.
